چکیده

A new design is presented for a time-ofight neutron spectrometer that uses a shaped scattering foil to generate deuteron recoils. It is shown that the number of recoils can be substantially increased by utilizing a three-dimensional, deuterated scattering foil in the shape of an ellipsoid, which maintains the time-ofight dispersion present originally in the neutrons. The time-integrated neutron spectrum can be extracted from deuteron recoils by time-ofight spectrometry using a detector, such as a silicon PiN diode, operated in current-mode. On inertial con nement fusion targets with D-T yield of 10, approximately 1700 deuteron recoils can be detected at 160 cm from the target.

Application of the coincidence counting technique to DD neutron spectrometry data at the NIF, OMEGA, and Z.

A compact neutron spectrometer, based on a CH foil for the production of recoil protons and CR-39 detection, is being developed for the measurements of the DD-neutron spectrum at the NIF, OMEGA, and Z facilities. As a CR-39 detector will be used in the spectrometer, the principal sources of background are neutron-induced tracks and intrinsic tracks (defects in the CR-39). To reject the backgrou...

A compact neutron spectrometer for characterizing inertial confinement fusion implosions at OMEGA and the NIF.

A compact spectrometer for measurements of the primary deuterium-tritium neutron spectrum has been designed and implemented on the OMEGA laser facility [T. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)]. This instrument uses the recoil spectrometry technique, where neutrons produced in an implosion elastically scatter protons in a plastic foil, which are subsequently detected by a proton spectrom...

The magnetic recoil spectrometer (MRSt) for time-resolved measurements of the neutron spectrum at the National Ignition Facility (NIF).

The next-generation magnetic recoil spectrometer for time-resolved measurements of the neutron spectrum has been conceptually designed for the National Ignition Facility. This spectrometer, called MRSt, represents a paradigm shift in our thinking about neutron spectrometry for inertial confinement fusion applications, as it will provide simultaneously information about the burn history and time...

Characterization of the energy distribution of neutrons generated by 5 MeV protons on a thick beryllium target at different emission angles.

Neutron energy spectra at different emission angles, between 0° and 120° from the Be(p,xn) reaction generated by a beryllium thick-target bombarded with 5 MeV protons, have been measured at the Legnaro Laboratories (LNL) of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics research (INFN). A new and quite compact recoil-proton spectrometer, based on a monolithic silicon telescope, coupled to a...

A stretch/compress scheme for a high temporal resolution detector for the magnetic recoil spectrometer time (MRSt).

A time-resolved detector concept for the magnetic recoil spectrometer for time-resolved measurements of the NIF neutron spectrum is presented. The measurement is challenging due to the time spreading of the recoil protons (or deuterons) as they transit an energy dispersing magnet system. Ions arrive at the focal plane of the magnetic spectrometer over an interval of tens of nanoseconds. We seek...
